Luke Skywalker’s Dark Quest for Jedi Knowledge in Star Wars #50

Luke Skywalker's Return to the Living Sea of Gazian: A Dark Revelation in Star Wars #50

Warning! This post contains a sneak peek for Star Wars #50.

The concluding installment of Marvel’s ongoing Star Wars series hints at a significant revelation regarding Luke Skywalker and the Jedi Order he aspires to establish. Following the events of the original trilogy and the Galactic Civil War, Luke Skywalker founded a new Jedi academy on the planet Ossus, which was later destroyed by his nephew, Ben Solo. However, a fresh preview of Star Wars #50 unveils that more sinister influences may have played a role in Luke’s quest for additional Jedi knowledge on a perilous world, set between Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.

In this preview for Star Wars #50, crafted by Charles Soule, Madibek Musabekov, and Rachelle Rosenberg, an older Luke Skywalker shares an essential tale with young Ben about his time in the Rebellion alongside Ben’s mother Leia, Lando, Chewbacca, as well as Threepio and Artoo. The narrative commences with Luke’s return to the Living Sea of Gazian, a formidable vergence in the Force that functions as a living library by capturing the current essence of those who enter its fungal sea. The new preview pages for Star Wars #50 can be viewed below:

During his inaugural visit, Luke connected with Jedi Master Elzar Mann from the High Republic Era and was granted copies of the sacred Jedi texts upon departing the powerful vergence. Yet, it appears that Luke’s renewed quest for wisdom may lead to encounters and insights far darker than he anticipated.

Luke Skywalker’s Return to the Living Sea of Gazian

In Pursuit of More Knowledge from the Past

On his initial journey to Gazian, Luke Skywalker obtained a trove of information invaluable to his Jedi journey between Episodes V and VI. Not only did he gain insights into the Jedi Order from the High Republic Era, but Luke also acquired the sacred Jedi texts—the very same ones seen in The Last Jedi, which Rey Skywalker would eventually inherit. Additionally, Elzar Mann demonstrated to him that becoming a Jedi was indeed a choice, with alternative paths available.

The entire experience on Gazian inspired Luke to pursue his Jedi path further. It equipped him with the necessary tools to continue growing as a Jedi, even after leaving his training with Yoda at the conclusion of The Empire Strikes Back. This knowledge would form the foundation of his new Jedi academy, which was ultimately destroyed by Ben Solo during his transformation into Kylo Ren.

New Darkness Awaits Luke Skywalker

What Will Gazian Reveal to the Galaxy’s New Hope?

Given this context, one must ponder what kind of darkness Gazian has in store for Luke during this subsequent visit. It’s notable that the High Republic’s Dark Jedi Azlin Rellis graces the cover of Star Wars #50, suggesting that Luke’s forthcoming encounter may not be rooted in the light as it was previously with Master Elzar Mann.

Simultaneously, it will be intriguing to see what Luke might learn from this darker aspect of the Living Sea of Gazian and whether it will influence his future Jedi academy within the Star Wars timeline. After all, it’s likely no coincidence that this final issue is being framed as a story recounted by Luke to Ben Solo years later. Undoubtedly, a new journey to this powerful and perilous Force vergence promises to be captivating.

Star Wars #50 will be available on September 11th from Marvel Comics.

Luke Skywalker

The son of Anakin Skywalker and Padmé Amidala, Luke was brought up on the desert planet Tatooine. Initially mentored by Obi-Wan Kenobi, Luke fired the fateful shot that destroyed the Death Star, and he became a rebel hero. Despite the fears of Obi-Wan and Yoda, Luke's faith in his father was proved well-founded when Vader returned to the light. With the Emperor defeated, Luke dedicated himself to bringing back the Jedi; his first attempt ended in tragedy due to Palpatine's manipulations, but Luke's legacy lives on in Rey.
