Phoenix and Cyclopsis represent one of Marvel’s most iconic couples, and a recent cosplay collaboration beautifully captures their enduring appeal. Despite their tumultuous history spanning several decades, Scott and Jean have emerged stronger than ever, making this cosplay homage particularly fitting.
Nathan Weir (@nate.k.weir) shared an impressive cosplay of himself as Cyclops, paired with @itsrosemoon as Phoenix. Weir donned an impeccable version of Jim Lee’s Cyclops design from the legendary X-Men run, while Moon shone in Jean Grey’s most famous costume—the classic green and gold Phoenix look by Dave Cockrum.
Although these two costumes never appeared simultaneously in the comics, they perfectly highlight each character’s most iconic appearance. Weir also acknowledged @shutter.owl for the photography and visual editing, hinting at more collaborations in the future.
X-Men Debuts a Founding Member's Crucial New Power (That Goes Beyond Mortal Limits)
This Cyclops and Jean Grey Cosplay Is Stunning
And Faithfully Reflects the Comics
Scott and Jean may be a powerhouse duo in the Marvel universe, but their relationship has been anything but smooth. After navigating adolescent turmoil, they became a couple just before X-Men #60 by Roy Thomas, Neal Adams, Tom Palmer, and Sam Rosen. However, Jean’s presumed death in the Dark Phoenix Saga put their relationship on hold. Upon Jean’s return, Scott was already married to Madelyne Pryor, later revealed as Jean’s clone. Yet, this did not prevent them from reuniting. Their marriage eventually followed a stint with the first X-Factor team after rejoining the X-Men, but that was only the beginning of their saga.
Despite the ups and downs, Cyclops and Phoenix remain a remarkable Marvel pairing.
During Grant Morrison’s New X-Men era, Scott engaged in a psychic affair with Emma Frost just before Jean’s second death. It took over a decade before both Scott and Jean were alive simultaneously again, allowing them to rekindle their relationship. By the Krakoan era, they were comfortable enough to open their relationship to include Wolverine, although X-Men editorial currently downplays this aspect. Scott and Jean remain together, albeit on separate sides of the galaxy, with Jean as a cosmic hero and Scott leading a new X-Men team on Earth.
How Do Cyclops and Jean Maintain Their Relationship?
Especially After So Much Turmoil?
The real question is how stable their relationship truly is. One consequence of the X-Men’s frequent relaunches is that Scott and Jean’s reunion before Krakoa seemed rushed, with little time dedicated to resolving their issues before the next storyline declared them a happy couple. What are Jean’s true feelings about Scott’s broader relationship with Emma, and how do Scott and Jean function so well now despite their complicated past? Regardless of how Cyclops and Phoenix manage their relationship, they remain an extraordinary Marvel duo, as this collaborative cosplay demonstrates.
