Destro’s Final Showdown: A Prelude to the Energon Universe
The self-titled miniseries, “Destro”, is reaching its thrilling finale with a climactic face-off against Cobra Commander. As the series concludes, it sets the stage for the upcoming Energon Universe series set to launch in November, gathering the notorious villains of G.I. Joe for an epic showdown. Destro, the arms dealer, has endured many trials, but his greatest challenge awaits as the series reaches its electrifying climax.
Prelude to the Energon Universe
In a sneak peek released by CBR for “Destro #5”, crafted by Dan Watters, Andrei Bressan, and Adriano Lucas, readers are offered a glimpse into the major conclusion of this miniseries. With Destro presumed dead, Tomax and Xamot have seized control of MARS Industries, and these Crimson Twins are eager to forge an alliance with Cobra Commander.
However, the reports of Destro’s demise are greatly exaggerated. The Scottish Laird makes a dramatic return, ready to reclaim his company from the Twins. This sets the stage for an epic conflict, with multiple factions battling for dominion over the global arms market and the precious energy source known as Energon.

Backstabbing and betrayal are recurring themes in the G.I. Joe universe. Historically, Destro has always plotted to wrest control of Cobra from the Commander. Their inevitable clash in this new continuity reestablishes their enduring rivalry within the Energon Universe. The two formed a tenuous alliance during the “Cobra Commander” miniseries, with the Commander offering Energon reserves acquired from the Dreadnoks to power Destro’s new Battle Android Troopers.
G.I. JOE Pushes the Franchise's Boundaries With This Gory New Kill
In his own series, Destro has been besieged by an elusive enemy. Initially suspecting Tomax and Xamot, this led to a full-scale war between MARS and the Crimson Twins’ Extensive Enterprises. However, “Destro #4” unveiled the true antagonist as a new iteration of Overkill, an A.I. created by Astoria Carlton-Ritz of Hybrid Technologies to preemptively neutralize global threats. After an assault by Astoria, disguised as Chameleon, Destro went into hiding, collaborating with General Flagg and the U.S. government to unmask his adversary.
The Future of Destro and Cobra Commander’s Alliance

Believing Destro to be deceased after Chameleon’s attack, the Crimson Twins swiftly moved to seize MARS and negotiate an alliance with Cobra Commander. However, with Destro’s return, an all-out war is anticipated to conclude the series. As suggested by the forthcoming “G.I. Joe #1” by Joshua Williamson, Tom Reilly, and Jordie Bellaire, the factions currently in conflict within “Destro” will eventually unite under Cobra Commander’s leadership. Yet, the longevity of these alliances within the Energon Universe remains uncertain.
“Destro #5” will be available from Skybound Entertainment on October 16th, 2024.
